GeneraVs Office, United States Army, Vol. X O?Pfutsch. Dr. John S. Billings, in presenting the tenth volume of this magnificent undertaking, states that it " includes 7,658 author-titles, representing 2,905 volumes and 7,282 pamphlets. It also includes 14,265 subject-titles of separate books and pamphlets and 29,421 titles of articles in periodicals." One of the easiest methods of testing the completeness and accuracy of a work of this kind is to look for references to oue's own modest contributions to medical literature; and the more humble and obscure these are the severer the test and the more triumphant the result it successful. We have submitted this volume to this description of trial with most satisfactory evidence of its truth and accuracy. The undertaking is a gigantic one, conceived with great ability and executed with the utmost industrv and fidelity. Dr. Billings has by this work immortalized himself, laid contemporaries and posterity under an immense load of obligation, and?what is probably the ruling principle of his life and work?opened out the whole field of medical literature and research to inquirers and students in a manner which will render reference to previous labour easy for centuries to come. Nor must we omit to extol the liberality of the administration which has, by accumulating a magnificent medical library and scattering this key to it all over the world,rendered so signal a service to science and contributed
